The Marathon Des Sables is known worldwide as the Toughest Footrace on Earth. It is six marathons in six days across the Sahara Desert, with a distance of 90-100km covered hallway through the race, known as the “Long Stage”.
Temperatures regularly reach 50°C. The terrain is arduous with endless miles of sand dunes and salt flats, interspersed with rocky trails, jebels and dunes. Competitors are self-sufficient and carry all their own food and equipment for the week.
As Team Captain, I couldn’t be more proud of what we have achieved so far. With recent wins at the UTMES 110km followed by the time spent training together at the Sahara Training Camp in Morocco, we’ve put the hard work in and we can’t wait to get to the start line.
Training has been tough at times and after peaking with several 100mile training weeks, we’re now in taper mode and enjoying the spare time to plan our final kit and nutrition for the race. My packed bag weighs 6.5kgs and includes all the compulsory kit for the event, my food and clothing. Going light in a race like MDS is crucial and this is the minimum backpack weight you’re permitted to have. Correct nutrition is also key as you’re always racing at a deficit calorie wise in events like this, I always choose extra food over any luxuries such as a stove, fuel or a camera.
With so much to consider in prepping your kit for a race like this, it is so nice to never have to worry about what clothing to race in. You could race an event like Marathon Des Sables in pretty much any of the X-BIONIC® range. It delivers everything I need for racing and it’s so nice to never have to worry about clothing kit for events.
With only a few weeks left until the event, we’ve finalised our kit for the Marathon des Sables. We’ll be running in The TRICK® set, Spyker Competition Calf Guards and the Fennec® Bandana. For further heat and sun protection, we’ll also be using the Energy Accumulator® Summerlight XQ-2 Arm Sleeve and the Wallaby Sweatbands.
X-BIONIC® is the perennial favourite for competitors taking part in the Marathon des Sables, the race photos are always a sea of competitors dressed from head to toe in and for good reason in X-BIONIC®. Simply put, nothing performs the way the brand performs in these inhospitable conditions. As a team we wouldn’t ever race in anything but X-BIONIC®. Turning sweat into energy for every single one of the 250kms we’ll be covering!
I’ll be posting updates over the coming weeks as well as my training guide, full kit list and nutrition plan to tackle multi-day events for anyone who’s looking to tackle the Marathon des Sables next year.
Happy training everyone!
