The 4th stage of the 100th Giro d'Italia was at the same time the first mountain arrival in San Martino on 1.466 metres. An escape group marked long time the stage, before the favourites in the final ascent took the gloves off. Among them was giro winner from 2000, Stefano Garzelli, cycling for Aqua & Sapone. Only in the fulminating final spurt Danilo Di Luca, winner from 2007, could beat him.
