Michi, official X-Bionic Tester, was somewhat sceptical about our latest functional underwear – the Radiactor™ Shirt und Radiactor™ Pants. At temperatures somewhere around freezing, he completed a run from Pfäffikon to Altendorf, Lake Zurich.
To get away from the traffic, Michi decided on a tough route over the high plateau away from the roads. For additional protection against the cold and damp conditions, he took only a rain jacket. The Radiactor™ cooling function on the front of the thigh muscles was very noticeable, he commented. “On the long 280m ascent up into the hills the function had the opposite effect and kept my legs warm. On my upper body, the T-shirt produced a pleasant cooling effect – just what I needed.”
The unique 3D-BionicSphere® System provides excellent heat regulation. SweatTraps absorb excessive perspiration and transfer it the surface where it evaporates, providing effective cooling. The cooling function only kicks in when the body starts to sweat. “At the end of the training session only the 3D-BionicSphere® System was damp with sweat,” confirmed Michi. Test result: “Perfect functionality, suitable for everyone.”

At last, a decent freebie at the start of a race. And what an honour – to be one of the first athletes to wear the new X-BIONIC Spyker in race conditions! It's always the same procedure at registration: you open the race bag, take out your start number, sort out the useful items and dump the rest. What’s this? A gift voucher for over € 40 – could be interesting... I made my way to the nearby X-BIONIC Shop on the road to Torbole, next to the Pizzeria Villa Aranci (viale Rovereto, 25) and soon had the object of desire in my very own hands. The new X-BIONIC Spyker certainly look cool. You wear them on the calves, where the partial compression system reduces vibration, improving performance. In addition, as with all X-BIONIC products, they turn sweat into energy. Now, I’m really curious.
The next day, it was still pretty chilly at the start of the race so I was I glad I was wearing the Spyker. In my experience, knee warmers get too hot at some point and taking them off during the race loses too much time. Things got straight down to business in what was the first race of the season and there was jostling for positions from early on. The ascent got tough following the 5km flat section. However, the compression function worked well and I arrived at the top (a good 1000m up) feeling relatively fresh. I’m not normally a fan of downhill sections, warm muscles tend to quickly cool through excessive sweating and end up feeling like lead. But this time it was completely different. My calves warmed up on the descent and sweat was stored and then slowly released for cooling purposes.
Fantastic. Seeing as they provide such an advantage, I was a bit puzzled as to why more riders weren’t using the Spyker. Never mind, I can only recommend them!

After the ‘marathon des sables’ I had what was probably too long a rest period.
Still, such experiences have to be properly digested, friends and relatives have to be briefed, the diary for the X-BIONIC blog needs to be finished and everyday life has to start again at some point. Whilst running through the middle of the desert someone persuaded me to enter the Chiemgauer 100… The start date is not that far away and the X-BIONIC Fennec Running Shirt, Running Pants and the Run Evolution X-SOCKS are still all lying (neatly folded) in the clothes drawer…

chiemgau4.jpg

AMy first test of form was the ‘SportScheck Stadtlauf’ in Munich, where I started alongside 18,000 other runners. Compared to a 100km mountain ultra marathon, a half marathon is a bit of a picnic. But this one really hurt. In spite of the great atmosphere, I finished course that included Munich's ‘Englische Garten’ full of nagging doubts. However, I did spot a new product from X-BIONIC, which looked something like Bavarian half stockings. A trendy, new gimmick? Hardly what you would expect from X-BIONIC. I had a quick chat with the guy wearing them and he was full of praise. He'd had a €40 voucher in his starter bag at the BIKE Festival in Riva and went straight out and bought himself a pair from the new X-BIONIC shop, Villa Aranci SNC, Viale Rovereto 25. He seemed genuinely impressed to finally find something worthwhile in his race bag. His curiosity had obviously been aroused by "for hardcore bikers only” slogan as he said he put them on immediately for the race the next day. The Spyker are based on the latest generation of compression technology, X-BIONIC partial compression, and work in the same way a classic leg compress. They use sweat to cool the blood, ensuring that the athlete can perform effectively for longer. Sounds logical. And if it works for bikers, it can’t be bad for runners either...

chiemgau3.jpg

I had to get myself a pair. After searching around and phone calls to numerous dealers, I still hadn't found any. Then, as if from heaven, I spied an X-BIONIC stand at the start of the Maratona dles Dolomites. I’d come for what was the ultimate test of form – cycling 138 km with a total ascent of 4,190m. At the stand, there was some highly professional demonstrating going on and I got my own Spyker to test out on the race the next day. Together with the X-BIONIC Fennec Bib Tight and Fennec Race Shirt, sweat was being turned into energy by the time I reached the Passo Giau – which was no bad thing seeing as I was nearly running on empty. But what could go wrong for a man who was just so well equipped? And there was good news at the finishing line: a personal best for the Maratona. Thank you X-BIONIC! Next up it was the event I'd been working towards – the 5th Chiemgauer 100km run with a height difference of over 4,400m. The race started at 05:00 in Ruhpolding. Among the crowd I spotted a familiar face – Denis from the Marathon des Sables. Aha… the old desert fox himself also had a pair of Spyker on.

chiemgau2.jpg

The Chiemgauer 100’s initial section involves 26km of forest trails, rough paths and an alpine trial marked ‘Danger of falling’ around the Rauschberg in temperatures of 10 °C, the ‘warm up’ as it were. Then it was up over the ski slopes of the Unterberg. It wasn’t long before I ended up with my left leg sunk in a boggy pit. Let's see how the waterlogged Run Evolution X-SOCKS ‘sock-in-a-sock-system’ copes with that then. And would my feet now end up covered in blisters... To put it bluntly: these socks are worth every cent.On the steep ascent to the Hörndlwandgipfel I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Markus Fohr, owner and manager of the Lahnstein Brewery and a convinced X-SOCKS fan. He had bought a pair of X-SOCKS Speed One two years ago at the K78 in Davos and still wears them for ultras. If that's not proof of hard wearing then I’d like to know what is.

chiemgau1.jpg

The muddy trials and difficult ascents meant that we had our work cut out for us. There was a pretty high risk of slipping and injury with every step. There was a pretty high risk of slipping and injury with every step. As the distance went on, tiredness also started to creep in. The route continued over the Jochbergalm to Hochsattel, down to Kohlstatt and up and over to the ‘Hochfelln Mittelstation’, down to Maria Eck and then over to Egg in a slightly more relaxed manner, followed by 6km of tough ascent up onto the Hochfelln. The 4km downhill section required utmost care and concentration and was then followed by the easier 15km back to Ruhpolding. The 4km downhill section required utmost care and concentration and was then followed by the easier 15km back to Ruhpolding. Then came the final lap on the springy running track of the town stadium and the final metres to the finishing line and it was over. 100km in the cold, hailstorm, icy winds on the top and scorching heat on the southern-facing slopes. You could use several changes of clothing. Or alternatively, you could take just the X-BIONIC Running Shirt with its 3D-BionicSphere® System. Amazing but true: it cools you down when you sweat and keeps you warm when you’re cold.I have to admit that X-BIONIC have really got it right. At the end of the day, nothing is more reliable than your own experience and there’s certainly plenty opportunity to collect it on a run like the Chiemgauer 100.

“This jacket is amazing ...I even tested it under the shower and it let nothing in and yet sweat was still able to escape,” explained an impressed Steffen Thier.

Triathlete Florian Mörtl, who successfully completed the 42.19 km run in this year's Kärnten Ironman, reports back on how his revolutionary X-SOCKS® compression socks made of original xitanit™ performed in the rainy, humid conditions.

moertl.jpg

07:00, 5th July 2009. This is it. The starter's pistol opened the Kärnten Ironman for long-distance athletes. The sky was covered by grey banks of cloud and the humid conditions were oppressive with little chance of consolation as the weather was not set to get any better. A tough test for the unique X-SOCKS®. “Over the whole 42.19 km I had no problems with the heat, although though you might have expected long socks have been uncomfortable in that humidity," reported Florian Karl Mörtl, full of admiration

The long years of research behind the X-SOCKS® development has paid off. The revolutionary xitanit™ material moves heat away from the body, making a big difference. In addition, the AirConditioning Channel® system enables warm air and moisture to be carried away. The channels are made out a fine mesh yarn and provide the perfect foot climate. A perfect solution, which other Kärnten athletes might also have benefited from, if they’d known about it. There weren’t many of them who ran like Florian Mörtl. In spite of the constant rain and soaking wet feet “due to their innovative woven structure, the socks dried in no time and I finished without any blisters (wet socks normally give me blisters straight away).”

I was got a Humdinger Shirt as a member of the Bikewear Test Team. It also turned out to be very effective on the mountain tour, where I wore it for the full two days.
4.8. 9:00 - 16:00: Watzmannhaus – Wimbachgries hut, approx. 14km with descents of 1100 m and 600 m.
During the initial ascent via Wimbachbrücke – in pouring rain – I wore the Humdinger under my anorak with a relatively heavy (60L) rucksack. After 7 hours, the jacket had started to let the rain in (unfortunately I had washed it – evidently not the right thing to do) and the shirt got pretty wet. There was no drying room in the hut, so I had to hang the shirt out on a line to dry. By the time we turned in for the night, there was so still so much moisture in the sleeves from the wet jacket and my sweat that I could wring it out by hand (not possible when I took it off). My Energizer underwear was also still a bit damp, but I kept it on – you could only really feel it at the waist belt.

Hundstodgatterl.jpg

5.8. 8:00 - 17:00: Wimbachgries hut - Hundstodgatterl – Kärlinghaus, approx 10km with 900m ascent and 600m descent through the ‘Steinernes Meer’. The shirt hadn’t completely dried when I put it on in the morning– but by breakfast it felt so good that I decided to leave it on anyway. Today's route had a steep, uphill start, followed by a downhill section – I’m not used to all this climbing (lots of breaks). The sun also came out in the course of the morning. By the time I reached the pass, I had sweated a lot. However, the Humdinger still felt so good that I didn't even need to put on a jacket for our lunch break at 2200m. The shirt provides good sun protection – the backs of my hands were really brown, compared to my lower arms. It also coped well with the (Tatonka) rucksack's carry system during the climbing section – I can’t see any sign of the material wearing.

A proud dad

Dear XBionic,

Last year my daughter ran cross country. In our County championships she dehydrated and collapsed 20 meters from in the finish in a 5000 meter race. We found the XBionic website and purchased a XBionic shirt for her to run in (under her team singlet).

She has used it all year and on Wednesday October 21st she won the championship. We have now purchased other XBionic gear but she absolutely loves it and is a big believer in your technology.

Thank you,

Mike Lawrence

A proud dad

Swim 3.86km, cycle 80.2km, run 42.195km. Impressive distances – for what is probably the hardest Ironman event in the world. Not to mention the 2,500m of ascent during the cycling. Florian Mörtl, endurance specialist and triathlete, completed the Lanzarote Ironman using X-BIONIC®'s performance enhancing Fennec® technology. Here’s what he had to say about it:

moertl4.jpg

After arriving in Lanzarote, I immediately went to have a look at the cycling and running routes. Thanks to the Fennec® technology’s heat reflector properties, I was able to ride and check out the hardest parts of the route under scorching sunny conditions without suffering any real loss of energy. During the competition itself the Bike Fennec® Short Shirt did exactly what it was supposed to and helped me conserve energy

moertl3.jpg

However, given the strong headwinds, rough asphalt roads and tough gradients, I still had to really push myself to get over the highest point of the ride – the Mirador del Rio. The windy climb up to Haría takes it out of you, especially at the end where you pretty exposed and have to cope with both the wind and the steep ascent. It was the merciless headwind that robbed me of the time I need to qualify for the Hawaii-Quali. I wasn’t able to make it up on the run.

moertl1.jpg

Kerry Harty takes part successfully in the most different forms of long-distance runs. She avoids neither mountain runs in Scottish highlands nor competitions on the road. For X-BIONIC® the Irish run talent tested the X-BIONIC® Running pants and the X-BIONIC® arm Warmers. Their professional result: High comfort with optimum support of the muscles.

„Primarily during the sprint sessions appeared the achievement-rising effect of the X-BIONIC® Running pants “, explained Kerry enthusiastically. Muscle vibrations are reduced by the gradual compression. She kept on the highly technical run trousers even for sleeping. „After exhausting road training the X-BIONIC® Running pants also support the regeneration of the muscles“, says Kerry.

The professional runner already used X-SOCKS® products and calls the gradual compression of the high-tech socks as a part of her recipe for success. "Since using X-SOCKS® Run Energizer I have experienced relief from tired calves and sore shins that have bothered me in the past whilst training and competing. Not only do the socks offer support and cushioning they are also very comfortable."
